Details:
Letter 45/46. Correspondence by Major Crummer re the escape of Johnstone from Newcastle gaol on 9th February 1845. Depositions were taken at the time by Major Crummer and Major Last from which it did not appear that culpability could be attached to any individual in the gaol. Immediate steps were taken for the apprehension of the prisoner however no further tidings of the man had been found. Constable John White who was on duty on the night when Johnstone effected his escape was discharged from his situation for inebrity and want of vigilance on several occasions subsequently to the escape of Johnstone
